68th Anniversary of Normandy Landings (D-Day)

Old war posters — it goes without saying that we should be eating this way now!  (Click on image to enlarge.)

Today, June the 6th, is the 68th anniversary of the Normandy landings (otherwise known as D-Day).

Yesterday the Little Ladies and I were walking home from school discussing what we would bake for our elderly neighbor’s birthday, and I mentioned that he shared his special day with the anniversary of D-Day.  “What’s that, mama?”  As I started to explain I looked up and saw a couple of vets (ages 89 and 90, they later told us) standing outside of a nursing home, and we walked over to introduce ourselves.  I let them do the explaining, and there we sat for about a half hour just chit chatting and enjoying each others company.

I get the impression that our visit made their day.  I know it made ours.   The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs estimates that as many as 850 World War II veterans die each day, so if you can, make it a point to go out and share in their memories.

I snapped this quick wind-blown picture with my camera phone:
